FAQs
What is the board asking for?
The board of education is asking the voters of Smithton to approve a $5,000,000 bond referendum to build and equip an addition to and alter, repair and equip the Smithton Elementary School Building. This could allow the district to eliminate the modular building, add classrooms, cafeteria/kitchen space, restrooms, gymnasium space, and a stage/dedicated music space.
When is the election?
The election is Tuesday, November 6, 2018. Early voting began September 27th. More information about voting can be found on the county clerk's website: www.countyclerk.co.st-clair.il.us/elections/Pages/default.aspx
When could the district begin construction?
Immediately following the election the design phase would begin with input from the community into the final plans. Once that is completed, architectural and engineering work would take place along with putting the project out to bid. Hopefully groundbreaking could take place before the end of the school year.
When would the tax increase take effect? How long is the repayment schedule?
The increase to the tax rate would be included on next years property tax rate. In order to keep the tax rate as low as possible the repayment of the bonds will take place over 20 years.
